“You’re so gay,” my teammate jested as I stood holding our motel room door open for a friend. It was the night before a greatly anticipated indoor track meet and our team was bunking in a Motor Inn. After 4 hours on a cramped bus, our runners had grown rowdy and the aforementioned shout wasn’t uncommon in our hallways. Typical team banter some may say, and I have grown accustom to it as that, but the banter can still be cutting. « Read the rest of this entry »

Organic Progression: A Coming Out Strategy

January 26, 2011 § 6 Comments

They say slow and steady wins the race, but when coming out their is no proper pace – just a proper mindset.

I came out to my best friend via text as we walked the boards/boardwalk together. Ocean City NJ is known as a family resort and at that moment there were a half dozen families near us with screaming children, yet for that one moment when she looked at her cell phone I swear there was silence and afterwords peace.  « Read the rest of this entry »

No Time Like the Present

January 20, 2011 § 2 Comments

If we aren’t making time for the things we love, what are we making time for? A life of consumption and production for the sake of either is a negligible excuse for existence.

This year I made a resolution: start making time for the things I value. One of which is you – or technically, all of you. The community who fostered strength and engendered hope within me. The people who are walking on a path towards equality. People like you who experience life along with me every day. Gay or straight, we are humanity, and this blog is for you.

The Mission:

In an attempt to pay forward the help I have received, I am writing this blog with a mission to ensure readers that you are not alone, instill a belief that it does not just get better – it gets downright great, start conversation while fostering community, and sew the seeds of positivity. Who couldn’t use a little more happiness/hope in his life?

While previously I delayed writing these thoughts due to a “lack of time,” I have concluded that there always will be a lack of time for whatever in life I want to do unless I start making time for it now. Who has time to find a boyfriend, follow a passion, start a business etc… while one is living life and battling hectic schedules of work and obligation? But is fulfilling one’s “duty” to consume and produce truly living or could it just be merely existing? With the start of this blog, I challenge you to start making time for the things you love and live not merely exist.

What can you do?

*If you happen to be a gay athlete, check out this blog started by three teen athletes who are creating a noteworthy collection of anecdotes from both closeted and out athletes and would greatly appreciate having yours.

As mentioned previously, this blog is for you! Craig’s Gay Word is my opportunity to continue giving back to a community which ameliorated me. I hope you join this journey along with me and those already on the march to equality. While I’m unsure of where this will take us – I’m sure it will be quite the adventure and it certainly seems better than merely existing.
