Should I Come Out on Facebook?

“[it] seem[s] easiest, but also… attention seeking,” 

“Its the person’s life the opinion of others should not matter… if coming out on a social network is what they want to do then fine.”

” [it’s] completely disingenuous to the gravity of coming out. ”

 

These are just a few answers to the question a reader posed to me two weeks ago: “Should I come out on Facebook?” However, I stand by my initial response: it depends on why and how you do it, but overall it can be  a worthwhile means of coming out.

Let the Reflecting Continue

10 months ago I awaited the inevitable with baited breath. College. Or more precisely, Georgetown. Days passed when my excitement built to a new crescendo, the peak at which I was ready to burst. Other days I grew weary of the impending change and the realization that I had a blank sleight on which to redefine myself. But I didn’t want to redefine anything.

It Gets Better – Where to Go From Here

Tonight airs Logo/MTV’s “It Gets Better” Special at 11:00pm, furthering the movement’s progress from an initial youtube video into a produced tv special – and not without reason. Thousands of videos have garnered millions of views and that alone proves the interest in hearing messages teeming with hope. Due to this fact, It Gets Better warrants the positive response that tonight is sure to bring – no other movement has highlighted the potential happiness that gay teens have quite like IGB. But with the end of tonight’s special, I encourage us to take the next step in the process and remind ourselves what the It Gets Better campaign really was: a large step in the right direction that needs to be followed by many others.

To Gay Teens This Valentine’s Day: A Message

Every year on this fateful day I read the updates pouring down my newsfeed: declarations of love, lyrically written woes of despair, and the preachings of “Singles Awareness Day” advocates. Yet rarely do I see a call to action for lgbtq teens, a group more heavily effected by Valentine’s Day then most would like to admit.

How My Acknowledged Sexuality Altered My Perceived Athletic Ability

“I can’t wait till the day when an athlete will come out… and it won’t be a big news story,” I hear often enough. “I’ll love it when people just WON’T CARE,” people say and understandably so. It seems a fair way to rate our lgbtq community’s progress is through judging the impact, or lack there of, that people have when they come out.

Gay College Experience: Jacob Woods

Not every College or University is rainbows and lollipops. Hamline University on the better end of the rainbow has continued show how LGBTQ friendly the campus  is. I fell in love when I came in and picked up a copy of the local newspaper when I toured the campus in June, which was pride month, and on their newspaper stand there was a pink colored print that had pride month events scattered cover to cover it. I picked it up and consumed every little bit I could. I was flaming with excitement!
